arteritis virus (EAV). EAV infected horses show various clinical sings such as pyrexia, edema of the legs, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea. Abortion occurs in pregnant mares infected with EAV, at a rate of approximately 50% during field epizootics. In the breeding areas, abortion is the most significant manifestation of EVA, however the pathogenesis is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the

Equine viral arteritis.

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) can cause prominent economic losses for the equine industry. The purpose of this review is to provide the pathologist some familiarity with the clinical history, lesions, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of EVA. EVA is caused by an arterivirus (equine arteritis virus, EAV), and the vascular system is the principal but not unique viral target. EVA has variable presentatio...

Bluetongue and equine viral arteritis viruses as models of virus-induced fetal injury and abortion.

A number of viruses have the capacity to cross the placenta and infect the fetus to cause, among other potential outcomes, developmental defects (teratogenesis), fetal death and abortion. Bluetongue virus (BTV) infection of fetal ruminants provides an excellent model for the study of virus-induced teratogenesis. This model has shown that only viruses modified by passage in cell culture, such as...

Equine Viral Arteritis: Essential Facts About the Disease

Although outbreaks are uncommon, equine viral arteritis is an important disease because of the potential risk of abortion in mares and establishment of the carrier state in a relatively high percentage of infected stallions. Equine arteritis virus carrier stallions constitute an important reservoir of infection, and appropriate precautions have to be taken when nonimmunized mares are inseminate...

Equine Viral Arteritis

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a contagious viral disease of equids caused by equine arteritis virus (EAV), an RNA virus that is classified in the family Arteriviridae. The virus is found in horse populations in many countries worldwide. EVA cannot be differentiated clinically from a number of other respiratory and systemic equine diseases. While laboratory-confirmed outbreaks of EVA have been...
